Trump 'Surprised' That FBI Raided Ex-Campaign Manager's Home

The FBI raided Manafort's northern Virginia home for tax documents and banking records late last month, signalling that Mueller's investigation had expanded to look at potential money laundering or violations of worldwide tax laws.

WilmerHale is also the firm where Mueller worked before taking over as special counsel to lead the investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.

United States media reported that Mueller had impaneled a grand jury to investigate Russia's alleged interference in the election on August 3.

Trump Jr.'s meeting with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya included Manafort, Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser, Jared Kushner, Russian political operative, Rinat Akhmetshin, and Russian real estate executive, Irakly "Ike" Kaveladze.

Mr Trump has called Mr Mueller's investigation a "witch hunt".

Law firm WilmerHale had been speaking on Manafort's behalf to investigators, but that relationship has ended, Maloni said.

"Or, they're going to put a ribbon on that and tell him, 'We've found these charges that could send you to jail for a period of time, we would like to know about collusion, or deals, '" he added.

Leaks may occur because "prosecutors and investigators are being cajoled by those interested in the escalation of the conflict with Russia", the lawyer said, adding that former US Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul and United Kingdom financier William Browder may be among those individuals.

"I thought [the raid] was a very, very strong signal, or whatever", Mr Trump told reporters during a working vacation at his golf club in New Jersey.

Manafort has been a subject of a longstanding FBI investigation into his dealings in Ukraine and work for the country's former president, Viktor Yanukovych.

Mueller's mandate is much the same as former Independent Counsel Ken Starr's when he investigated President Bill Clinton.

He replied within minutes: "If it's what you say I love it especially later in the summer".

The search is a sign that the investigation into Manafort has broadened, and is the most significant public step investigators have taken since the special counsel, Robert Mueller was appointed in May.

The request for documents, which was described to CNN, was returned with thousands of pages relating to Flynn and his consulting firm. Recall he was the first Speaker to be slapped with a $300,000 penalty for ethics violations and he has much in common with Trump when it comes to marital fidelity.
