Mueller seeks details from WH on Flynn lobbying for Turkish businessman

Financial entanglements of former national security advisor became the focus of the ongoing investigation into possible collusion between the Donald Trump campaign and Russian Federation in the 2016 election on Friday night.

Flynn's former lobbying firm, the Flynn Intel Group, was paid $530,000 to represent Ekim Alptekin, a Turkish businessman, during the final months of the USA presidential campaign, according to foreign agent registration paperwork filed with the Justice Department. Mueller is attempting to determine whether the Turkish government was behind any of that money.

Mr Alptekin has publicly denied that there was anything untoward about the payments, which funded a campaign to discredit Fetullah Gulen, a Muslim cleric said to be behind a failed coup in Turkey in July 2016.

Mr Flynn, a former lieutenant general in the USA army, failed to register as a foreign agent when Flynn Intel Group signed a $600,000 contract with Mr Alptekin's Dutch company Inovo BV in August 2016.

CNN reported Thursday that Mueller's investigators have focused on Flynn's lobbying work for the Turkish government.

Flynn - who was ousted mere weeks after being named Trump's national security adviser over mischaracterizing contacts with Russian officials - is at the center of the Russia controversy plaguing the White House. "And that was one of the things we discussed". Although the request is not a subpoena, this is the first time the White House has been directly asked to transfer documents to the Mueller's investigation team.

Reports of the close examination of Flynn's finances came a day after it was announced that Mueller is assembling a grand jury to investigate the Trump campaign's alleged ties to Russian Federation. But the contract ended in mid-Novermber 2016, around the time that Flynn was announced as President Donald Trump's first national security adviser.
