European Union extends Russian Federation sanctions over Crimea

The new United States sanctions could also impact European Union efforts to further diversify the energy sector, particularly in the Baltic, he said.

The U.S. sanctions targeting Russian Federation have faced a strong resistance from the European countries, given the fact that the European companies are sometimes the ones that provide technology to Russia's gas export pipelines.

It said in a statement Friday that the turbines were sold to Russia by German electricity giant Siemens for use on Russian territory.

The EU said the blacklisted companies also include Siemens' two contracting companies that moved the gas turbines to the Crimea in violation of EU sanctions, which bar business being conducted in the Black Sea peninsula since its annexation from Ukraine in 2014. The Commission says this contributes to the establishment of an independent power supply for Crimea and Sevastopol which "supports their separation from Ukraine, and undermines the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine".

The EU - which has a strict policy of refusing to recognise Moscow's annexation of Crimea - said 153 people and 40 companies had now been targeted by individual sanctions against Russian Federation.

The companies placed under sanctions are the contracting party which purchased gas turbines and is responsible for the transfer, the current owner of the gas turbines, and a company specializing in control and communication systems for power plants, including in the Crimean cities of Sevastopol and Simferopol.

Russia considers new European Union sanctions absolutely farfetched and reserves the right to retaliatory measures, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated on Friday, TASS reports.

Earlier Wednesday, US President Donald Trump signed into law the bill which imposes new sanctions against Russia, Iran and North Korea and which limits his ability to ease sanctions without approval from Congress.

Previous sanctions had all been coordinated on both sides of the Atlantic.
