Cumberland County will spray for mosquitoes around Camp Hill tonight

According to an article in the Jacksonville Journal Courier, Greene County health officials confirmed the presence of West Nile virus in a mosquito found near Roodhouse. His ward includes the park where the mosquito was found.

Remove standing water from buckets, unused kiddy pools, old tires or similar sites where mosquitoes commonly lay eggs.

No other spraying is now scheduled in Riverside, but vector control officials will monitor the situation throughout the summer, district spokesman William Van Dyke said.

"The county is still conducting a mosquito trapping and identification program with grant funds we received from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services", Farmer said.

Avoid being outdoors when mosquitoes are active (especially late afternoon, dusk to dawn and early morning). The birds are also tested for West Nile Virus, the release stated, and so far this season one bird has been collected for testing, with lab results pending.

Since 1999, when West Nile virus was first detected in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been tracking the mosquito-borne disease each summer from June to September. While the donor has shown no symptoms of the infection, local health officials say that all blood donations positive for the virus have been discarded and are not being used for blood transfusions. Humans most commonly get the virus from the bites of infected mosquitoes, which pick up the virus from infected birds.
