Trump aide Greenblatt heading to Jordan for talks after Israel visit

An Israeli security guard working for the Israeli Embassy in Amman is being held in Jordan, after he killed two Jordanians on Sunday while being attacked by one of them with a screwdriver.

Sunday's fatal shooting incident tested already tense relations between Israel and Jordan, one of two Arab states with which it has peace treaties.

Israeli media on Tuesday showed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu giving a hero's welcome to the unidentified embassy staffer who killed a 16-year-old boy and a surgeon. In a sign of the importance Israel places on its ties with Jordan, the Israeli government moved quickly to restore calm.

No doubt this extremely serious event will complicate the already strained relationship between Jordan and Israel, entangled in sensitive regional negotiations to resolve the Jerusalem Temple Mount crisis and stabilize the situation. A second person, the building's landlord, was also shot dead in the incident.

A diplomatic standoff developed after Israel refused to turn over the embassy staff for questioning, citing the diplomatic immunity bestowed on them under global law.

Israeli authorities say the metal detectors are needed because the July 14 attackers smuggled guns into the site and emerged from it to shoot the officers, reported AFP.

Argaman reportedly reconstructed the attack with the Jordanians and produced evidence that the attacker - Mohammed Zakaria al-Jawawdeh, 17 - had a record of violent behavior, which cleared away any remaining doubts that the guard's account was true. The Jordanian owner of the apartment in which the attack occurred, who was present at the time of the attack, was inadvertently hit by gunfire and later died.

On Friday thousands of people gathered in Amman protesting at the security measures.

The king said immediate measures should be taken to restore stability in the holy site and end the continued tensions, underlining the need to remove all security measures taken by Israel.

Jordanian police had said they wanted to question him.

The tensions over the Muslim-administered shrine erupted after Israel installed metal detectors at the gates, in response to a shooting attack from there that killed two Israeli policemen.
