President to nominate Gov. Sam Brownback to administration position

The Kansas Legislature overrode Brownback's veto to repeal his signature tax cuts a little more than a month before President Donald Trump selected him to serve as the next ambassador at-large for global religious freedom, a position based in Washington, D.C., where Brownback spent 16 years as a member of the U.S. House and Senate.

The White House said that Brownback is a former US senator and representative, and has worked on issues related to religious freedom, according to reports. "I am honoured to serve such an important cause", Brownback said in a tweet.

Brownback was first elected governor in 2010 after a failed presidential run and 15 years in the U.S. Senate, overseeing Kansas' transformation into one of the leading laboratories for conservative policies.

"I think when new governors take office they will be careful they don't go down the road that Brownback did and that will be the legacy this state will spend the next few years digging out from Brownback".

"I'm not surprised that he's taking this position", state senator Oletha Faust-Goudeau said.

Gov. Sam Brownback will give up the governor's mansion in Topeka to take a relatively obscure ambassadorship after seeing his power and popularity severely diminished in the past year.

"President Trump has made this selection in six months, whereas it took his predecessor 27 months to do the same", said James Dobson, host of My Family Talk and founder of Focus on the Family.

"As anti-religious freedom regimes expand around the world", Lankford said Wednesday, "the United States should clearly speak out for human rights, including religious liberty".

Several of Brownback's colleagues, primarily Republicans, expressed support for his nomination, including Senators Pat Roberts and Jerry Moran. "Religious freedom is such a hallmark of a forward-thinking nation".

"It's a pretty big office - probably has 20-25 maybe even 30 plus the new law that was passed in December really enhances the office". He noted Brownback was "uniquely qualified" for the ambassadorship.

Having a former governor and member of Congress in the role "will raise the profile", Wolf said. "70 some percent of the people are living in a religiously oppressed environment".

Aaron Estabrook, executive director of the Save Kansas Coalition, which has criticized Mr. Brownback and advocated political moderation, said he was "relieved" to know the governor was moving on. Givens recalls. "That plan would have helped a lot of people suffering from disabilities and mental illnesses".

He'll be expected to assist religious and human rights groups, testify before Congress on issues of religious freedom, and meet with foreign government officials to discuss persecution of religious minorities in their countries.
