Now, the Celtics wait on Hayward

For a solid 10 minutes on Tuesday, Celtics fans rejoiced that Gordon Hayward had chosen Boston.

The Utah Jazz has been Hayward's team since he arrived in the league.

Hayward, 27, now becomes the focal point of the Celtics with a young core of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and others to build around him.

NBA Twitter essentially descended into chaos from there, as reputable writers were reporting both stories - that an NBA source confirmed Hayward was Boston-bound and that his agent was saying otherwise.

According to Sam Amick of USA Today, Hayward wants to sleep on the decision before revealing his choice on the Fourth of July. He hosted the incumbent Jazz on Monday, finishing up a three-city swing that also saw him in Miami on Saturday.

Hayward's max deal with Boston will come in at $127.8 million over four years. After choosing Butler, Hayward accomplished everything Stevens suggested might be possible and then some, needing just two college seasons to turn himself into a lottery pick.

The Celtics must still figure out how to clear cap space for Hayward. Unless the free agent chose to take less than the max, Ainge will likely need to find a new home for either Marcus Smart or Avery Bradley.

Like a year ago, when Kevin Durant announced he was joining Golden State, there are going to be some big National Basketball Association fireworks on the 4th of July.

It also is the second straight summer that the Celtics have successfully recruited a coveted player on the free-agent market.

It could play in the Jazz's favor that Hayward's favorite player growing up, Reggie Miller, planted his roots in IN soil for the duration of his 18-year career, too.
