Driver in runaway bus wreck was just third day on the job

The MTA is investigating after a runaway bus barrelled backwards down a Brooklyn street early Wednesday morning, injuring one person and damaging parked cars and a church.

An MTA bus driver finishing her shift accidentally left her bus in neutral at the top of a hill before exiting the vehicle, resulting in a sight most Bushwick residents - or anyone, really - likely do not see every day.

As the bus rolled down Palmetto St.at about 12:37 a.m., it smashed into several cars and crashed into a church at Knickerbocker Ave.

The MTA employee was not injured, but WABC reported that one man who was changing a tire on the street during the incident jumped out of the way when he saw the bus. New York's PIX 11 news reports the bus hit at least six cars and caused thousands of dollars in damage.

The bus, Ortega said, "hit the [BMW] with so much force" that it wrecked the front end of the burgundy vehicle. He was taken to Wyckoff Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The city buildings department determined there was no structural damage to the church.

It is not known whether the driver will face any charges.

The 30-year-old driver was just three days into her new job, according to the Transport Workers Union, which represents MTA drivers.
