Media Credits Editors for Kelly Interview With Alex Jones

As CNN notes, that's "the fewest viewers that Kelly's weekly news magazine telecast, Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly, has drawn since its debut three weeks ago".

Jones later leaked audio of the full interview online. The fringe element that Jones represents needs to be understood, which isn't the same as needing to be condoned.

"Here's the thing, Alex Jones isn't going away", she said Sunday night.

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The publicity and uproar in the days before Sunday's broadcast of Megyn Kelly's interview with conspiracy theorist Alex Jones didn't translate into ratings.

Jones also downplayed his connection to Trump, who has spoken warmly of him and at times seemed to use conspiracies aired on Infowars in his campaign speeches. When Kelly asked him if he had anything to say to Jones for Father's Day, when the interview aired, he responded, "I think he's blessed to have his children to spend the day with, to speak to".

Leading up to the interview, NBC dealt with advertiser backlash, threats of legal action from Sandy Hook families, and the local NBC-owned Newtown station even refusing to air the interview, period. Jones has said he believes that the shooting was a government hoax that used child actors. He leaked audio of his pre-production discussions with Kelly, hoping to create suspicion that Kelly's real goal for wanting to interview him was to do a hit piece on him. Can't they just choose not to watch, just as I would not have watched the interview?

Not surprisingly, Jones proved hard to pin down, expressing ambivalence or seeking to deflect responsibility for certain views without renouncing them. By all measures, that's virtually the same showing Kelly got with final adjustments during week two - again trailing a 60 Minutes repeat. While it might sound like odd advice regarding an anchor who has spent the past year in the spotlight, NBC's best hope would be to finish "Sunday Night's" summer run without any more major waves, and hope for a fresh start when her morning program makes its debut in the fall.
