Protests as USA cop is acquitted of killing black motorist

MINNEAPOLIS-The Minnesota State Patrol arrested 18 people in St. Paul early Saturday after protesters shut down Interstate 94, furious at the not-guilty verdict for a St. Anthony police officer in Philando Castile's death.

The protesters marched through St. Anthony on Sunday to remember Philando Castile and demonstrate against the acquittal of Officer Jeronimo Yanez.

Yanez, 29, was charged with second-degree manslaughter - the first time a police officer had been charged with the death of a citizen in Minnesota. Castile had a permit for the weapon. Officer Jeronimo Yanez, who is Latino, was acquitted Friday of manslaughter and two lesser charges.

The city of St Anthony police department said Yanez will not be returning to work in the city. "[The] public will be best served if Officer Yanez is no longer a police officer in our city", and will offer him a "voluntary separation agreement" to ease his transition to another career.

Friday's march remained largely peaceful.

The protesters had been engaged in a peaceful demonstration Friday outside the Minnesota State Capitol, before a group of about 1,500 of them chose to stand in the middle of Interstate 94, blocking traffic on the freeway, police said. Protestors were given the opportunity to march back up the ramps to leave.

Authorities arrested 18 people during a protest of the acquittal of a suburban Minneapolis police officer who shot and killed a black driver.

Castile appealed to the U.S. Attorney's Office to review and investigate the case. Americans were stunned to see the video, live-streamed on Facebook, of his panicked girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, as blood spread on Castile's shirt.

"We are horrified and distraught by yet another police killing of an African American man for which no one will be held accountable".

Mr Castile had reportedly been reaching for his wallet but the officer testified that Mr Castile was ignoring his commands not to pull out the gun and he feared for his life. They contended that Castile was not a threat.

After learning that Jeronimo Yanez will not be punished for shooting Philando Castile, his family has made their feelings clear.

Castile's mother, Valerie, who addressed the crowd Friday after leaving the court, blasted the decision. "I will never have faith in the system".

The jury cleared the policeman of second degree manslaughter and two counts of felony of intentional discharge of a risky weapon for endangering the safety of Ms Reynolds and her four-year-old daughter.

"It is a sad state of affairs when this type of criminal conduct is condoned simply because Yanez is a policeman".

Castile's sister, Allysza Castile, said Dae-Ann was like a child to him.

July 14: A funeral for Castile at the St. Paul Cathedral draws thousands of mourners.

In the school district's statement, an unnamed coworker says Castile was smart and "overqualified" for his position, yet still took his job seriously.

It has been a time of intense grief and controversy over the last few days in St. Paul, Minnesota and for many invested in the case of Philando Castile.

Meanwhile, St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman described Castile as a "son of Saint Paul".
