Confed Cup: Portugal draw 2-2 with Mexico

Portugal jumped out to a 1-0 lead over Mexico in the Confederations Cup on Sunday, and it came a brilliant pass from Cristiano Ronaldo.

The match is likely to decide the group victor. Portugal, the defending European champions, play Mexico on Sunday in their Group A opener in the eight-nation competition that serves as a warm-up for next year's World Cup in Russian Federation. Portugal will play Mexico in the Confederations Cup, Group A soccer match scheduled for Sunda.

KAZAN, Russia (AP) - Title contenders Portugal and Mexico fought out an entertaining 2-2 draw in the Confederations Cup on Sunday, with each team scoring in the last five minutes.

However, one veteran team is drawing special attention - Mexico is playing against Portugal on Sunday's much-anticipated game.

Of greater effect was the astute piece of vision later in the first half, which set up Ricardo Quaresma for a strike that counted, even if the speed and power that used to characterize Ronaldo initially failed him.

"It's not the result we wanted, we had the game nearly won", said Ronaldo, who was voted the man of the match. The contest is arguably the most highly anticipated game of the group stage, with both teams arriving in Russian Federation with hopes of winning the tournament. We think that, as a whole team, they're excellent.

With this draw, Portugal and Mexico are in second and third place, respectively, in Group A with one point each. Portugal had to wait for what seemed an unnecessary review of a good goal scored.

For Mexico's coach Juan Carlos Osorio, he too does not have a lot of injuries to deal with but his captain and Mexico's most experienced player Rafael Marquez could miss the first match because of a back spasm. "We faced the European champions, a team that plays at a very high level, and we played equal to them".

KAZAN, Russia (AP) - Portugal is hoping a red-hot Cristiano Ronaldo can continue his sparkling form and help the European champions show that their victory at Euro 2016 wasn't a fluke.

"It's the new rule, and if it brings benefits to football, that's fine", Portugal coach Fernando Santos said.

A regular of Portugal's youth teams, Silva began attracting headlines when he joined Porto's senior squad and played well from the start, finishing the season with 21 goals.

The first goal was an example of that and showcased a moment of brilliance from Ronaldo.

Prosecutors lodged a complaint at a Spanish court this month in which Ronaldo is accused of defrauding the Spanish treasury of €14.7million in tax owed on image rights.

The Portuguese sports daily A Bola published a front-page story Friday saying that Ronaldo was upset with the accusations made against him and that his decision to leave Madrid was "irreversible". The team said that he couldn't go because he was receiving post-game treatment, although it said it wasn't anything serious.

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Raphael Guerreiro failed to deal with a cross into the box and Carlos Vela teed up Hernandez, who met the cross with a diving header.

"Ronaldo is motivated", young Portugal forward Andre Silva said. Portugal had a goal disallowed in the first half after the referee consulted with the video assistant referee - and once more it provoked a storm of controversy.
