Robert Mueller hires 13 lawyers to handle Russian Federation investigation

The future of Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general, came under doubt Friday when Trump attacked him in a tweet and a US official confirmed that Rosenstein has told colleagues he may have to recuse himself from the inquiry because he'd criticized James Comey in a memo before Trump fired the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director.

ABC notes that, at this point, Rosenstein has "privately acknowledged" that he might eventually be called at a witness in the investigation, largely because he penned the memo that led to former FBI Director James Comey's firing.

Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein, a Senate Intelligence Committee member, said she was "increasingly concerned" Trump would try to fire not only Mueller, but also Rosenstein.

President Donald Trump walks with National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster from the Oval Office to Marine One on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, Friday, June 16, 2017, for a short trip to Andrews Air Force Base, Md., then onto Miami.

Rosenstein told senators this week that only he can fire special counsel Mueller - and he won't.

After Trump's tweet Friday morning, a person close to the president's legal team told NPR's Scott Horsley that the tweet referred to the Wednesday Washington Post report regarding possible obstruction of justice. After the statement, the Post updated the Kushner article so that its first sourcing reference was to "U.S. officials".

A spokesman for Trump's personal attorney had strong words in response to the news.

If Donald Trump fires Rod Rosenstein or prods him into recusing himself from the Russian Federation meddling investigation he oversees, the president risks creating chaos at the Justice Department while failing to stop the inquiry.

Sessions recused himself from oversight of the FBI's investigation into possible collusion between the Kremlin and the Trump campaign in March after it emerged that he held two undisclosed meetings with the Russian ambassador past year. But Trump later said in a television interview that he fired Comey at least in part because he was frustrated over the Russian Federation investigation Comey was leading.

Citing a memo from the general counsel's office of Trump's transition team, the Times said members were given the order on Thursday for any information involving Russian Federation or Ukraine in the latest sign of the investigation's expanding reach.

The Associated Press said Mr Mueller was among the candidates Mr Trump interviewed to replace Mr Comey.

Rosenstein did not explain why he issued the statement. The scope of the investigation appears to be widening nearly every day, with more matters under investigation and more individuals under the microscope.

Rosenstein has been overseeing the Russian Federation probe since shortly after Sessions recused himself. Last month, news surfaced that Kushner may have discussed creating a secret communications channel between the Trump transition team and the Kremlin with Kislyak.

President Trump can not directly fire the special counsel.

Trump's tweets come after the top lawyer for his transition team warned the organization's officials to preserve all records and other materials related to the Russian Federation probe.

Inside the White House, a sense of foreboding has taken hold on even the most junior staff and up to the Oval Office, as news emerged that Vice President Mike Pence has hired a high-powered outside counsel to represent him. Pence headed the Trump transition until inauguration day.

Cohen has worked for Trump since the mid-2000s and was active in the campaign. Those associates include former national security adviser Michael Flynn, campaign chairman Paul Manafort, foreign policy aide Carter Page and outside adviser Roger Stone. He has already been subpoenaed by the House Permanent Select Intelligence Committee.
