Bill Maher apologises for using n-word

Bill Maher apologises for using n-word

"What [David] understood was that is a line that he can not cross and even his comedy can not cross", Dyson said.

Ice Cube cut right to the chase when he appeared on "Real Time With Bill Maher" Friday night telling the host, "I knew you was gonna f-k up sooner or later".

Until recently Maher was known as the Susan Lucci of the Primetime Emmys, having racked up dozens of nominations for writing, producing and starring in "Politically Incorrect", various stand-up comedy specials and "Real Time" without ever taking home an award.

Then he brought on Michael Eric Dyson to have an honest discussion about his use of that word and why it offended so many. "We are trained to get a laugh".

"What they thought was, if even Bill Maher can at some level capitulate to a level of unconscious privilege, then the rest of us are in a serious spot", added Dyson. "But I think this is a teachable moment, not just to you but to the people who are watching right now". "That's why I apologise freely and I reiterate it tonight". On the live Friday night broadcast of his political talk show, to cheers of support, Maher greeted his studio audience by saying, "Thank you for letting a sinner in your midst". Maher repeatedly expressed regret, saying it was an off-the-cuff comment.

Maher apologized to Cube, who accepted the apology, before giving his stance on the matter. I love your show, you've got a great show, but you've been buckin' up against that line a little bit. And they can't. It's a word that has been used against us; it's like a knife, man.

"Not by me", Ice Cube replied. "I don't want to pretend this is more of a race thing than a comedian thing", he told Dyson. "Because I think there's a lot of guys out there who cross the line because they a little too familiar-or they think they too familiar-or its guys that, you know, might have a black girlfriend or two who made them some Kool-Aid every now and then, and they think they can cross the line".

Ice Cube joined the host later in the show and said that the word is "like a knife" because it can be used as a tool or weapon. "You can't have it back".

While later in the show, guest and activist Symone Sanders said that it was like a 'slap in the face to black America'.

He also made it clear that he knew the use of the horrific slur was "wrong", but a "mistake" made on his part.
