Qatar FM rejects intervention in foreign policy

"At the end, there won " t be any escalating measures in response from Qatar because it believes such disputes among fraternal countries should be solved at a dialogue table", the foreign minister said, adding that there must be a disclosure session to discuss points of view, identify the areas of difference and work to limit them while respecting each side's opinions.

"We can live forever like this", Foreign Minister H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani told reporters in Doha.

Kuwaiti emir Sheikh Sabah al Ahmad al Sabah has said that he has initiated mediation efforts to seek a solution to the regional crisis but the minister said that his country had not yet received any request.

"We are an independent country with sovereignty and we refuse any custody over Qatar", he said, speaking at the ministry of foreign affairs.

Qatar has vowed it will not surrender its foreign policy in a row with other Arab states over its alleged connections to extremism.

Analysts say the crisis is an extension of a pre-existing dispute which saw Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain temporarily recall their ambassadors from Doha in 2014 over Qatari support for Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood.

Qatar rejected the allegations as baseless and unjustified. "So when the Qatari foreign minister says "listen, we need to engage in dialogue", we have done that for many years - that's just a statement for western consumption". The UAE's Gargash on Wednesday said, the measures against Doha were limited to diplomatic and economic ties, but warned that no one could project the "dynamics of a crisis".

The four Arab countries have suspended all flights to and from Doha and closed off sea and air links to Qatar.

Saudi Arabia has also sealed off Qatar's only land border, a crucial lifeline for food imports.

The minister added that Qatar would respect its LNG gas agreement with the United Arab Emirates, despite the UAE allying with Saudi Arabia in the rift.
