SpaceX to launch Falcon 9 today

SpaceX is going to attempt to re-use one of its Dragon capsules for the first time in an active mission to resupply the International Space Station.

But of course, the primary mission is not to land the rocket but to get almost 6,000 pounds of supplies and science experiments to the ISS. Release of the Cygnus by the station's robotic arm is scheduled for June 4 at 9:10 a.m.

Live launch coverage of the SpaceX Nasa resupply CRS-11 mission launch will begin on Nasa Television, the SpaceX website and SpaceX's hosted webcast on YouTube at 5:15PM EST (10:15PM BST). The spacecraft has undergone significant refurbishment, and has a new heat shield.

The refreshed cargo ship, being used for a second time, will be toting approximately 6,000 pounds of materials and supplies to the ISS.

This particular Dragon has flown to the ISS once before, back in September 2014.

The company's 230-foot-tall Falcon 9 rocket will boost a Dragon capsule filled with supplies and experiments. The historic site of the Apollo launches, including the Apollo 11 mission to the moon, at the Kennedy Space Center on Merritt Island, Florida. The spacecraft returned to Earth a month later after having successfully deployed around 2.5 tons of cargo to the space station.

In short, today is a big deal, and it will be pretty damn cool to watch SpaceX make history again.

SpaceX does not publicly say how much the Dragon spacecraft is worth.

The heavy payload of 13,448lbs went to a high orbit of 22,000 miles, hence the Falcon 9 rocket didn't have enough propellant left to land, SpaceX said before the flawless launch.

Science experiments packed into Dragon include ways to study roll-out solar panels, neutron stars, osteoporosis, microgravity's effects on cardiovascular health, Earth-observation tools and more. There's a 70 percent chance that conditions will be favorable, with the risk that a few clouds may get in the way, according to Patrick Military Air Force Base.

The spaceflight company SpaceX is one of several firms building private space taxis and cargo ships to launch astronauts and supplies into space.
