WH says Trump won't block Comey testimony

President Donald Trump will not try to block fired FBI Director James Comey from testifying before Congress, opting not to invoke executive privilege, spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Monday at the White House briefing.

Presidents can assert executive privilege to prevent government employees from sharing information.

The White House has denied that the conversation with Comey took place as described in the alleged memo, but have offered no further clarification.

Four months into his presidency, Donald Trump has filled only five of the 53 top jobs at the Pentagon - the slowest pace for nominations and confirmations in over half a century.

In case you've been avoiding the news for the sake of your fleeting sanity, the president reportedly asked Comey to back off the Russian Federation investigation, Comey supposedly said nyet, the president reportedly called Comey a "nut job" and officially canned him.

This kind of an order or request can be interpreted by authorities as obstruction of justice which could have carried repercussions for Trump, especially as he sacked Comey thereafter. The White House is hoping it will be able to build some Democratic support for its tax plan as well as a massive infrastructure investment plan, which Short said he hopes to tackle this calendar year.

Democrats who argue that Trump has already behaved in a manner tantamount to obstructing justice meanwhile jumped on Trump's comment in an NBC interview in May that he was thinking of the Russian Federation probe when he fired Comey.

The New York Times first reported the memo, which was confirmed to ABC News by a source close to Comey.

On Monday's Special Report, Mollie Hemingway delivers commentary on former FBI Director James Comey's upcoming Senate hearing.

Independent analysts have said they don't believe Comey, now a private citizen, can be stopped if he is intent on telling his story.

"I think that the president is often very effective in driving our message in Congress", said Short, who argued that the president won the election because he was "not a conformist candidate" and voters were anxious for change in Washington.
