Israelis parade to mark 50 years of capturing East Jerusalem

Speaking at the White House earlier this month, U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that achieving peace between Israelis and Palestinians "may not be as hard as people have thought over the years".

During his tour, Mr Trump has had separate meetings with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

The US president used the occasion to also condemn the "evil losers" behind a bomb blast at a pop concert in the British city of Manchester that killed 22 people. He reiterated the Palestinians' demands, including establishing a capital in East Jerusalem, territory Israel claims as well, insisting that "our problem is not with the Jewish religion, it's with the occupation and settlements, and with Israel not recognizing the state of Palestine".

He also said he's confident the alliance between Israel and the USA will become greater and stronger under Trump's leadership.

He became the first sitting U.S. president to visit the site in the Israeli-annexed east of the city.

Samri said 15 Israeli teenagers were also detained after they prayed at the al-Aqsa compound, defying a restriction which allows Jews to visit the site but forbids them to pray there.

In his appearance with Abbas, Trump made what many took as a reference to Palestinian payments to the families of terrorists.

Mr Abbas' Fatah party is at sharp odds with Islamist group Hamas, which is in power in the Palestinian enclave of Gaza, leaving no unified Palestinian position on peace.

Abbas had sought to convince the unpredictable USA president to remain committed to an independent Palestinian state. While both Netanyahu and Abbas have made positive noises about their readiness to negotiate, both also face domestic constraints on their freedom to maneuver and strike a deal.

Trump is visiting Jerusalem and West Bank on the second part of his maiden foreign trip since taking office in January.

On Thursday, special envoy of the Trump administration to the Middle East Jason Greenblatt is coming to Israel to continue the peace discussions with Netanyahu.

Trump's visit to Jerusalem has been laden with religious symbolism.

It is unclear if the "pressure" exerted by Trump would resonate with Israeli leaders.

In effect, it would offer Israel recognition by the Arab world and the "normalisation" of relations in exchange for a full withdrawal from the territory Israel has occupied since the June 1967 Middle-East war, including East Jerusalem. Former President Barack Obama's note - written when he was first running for president - was much longer. It "should trouble us" that the USA signed a roughly $110 billion arms deal with Saudi Arabia during Trump's trip, Israeli Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz said. The worldwide community doesn't recognize Israeli sovereignty over east Jerusalem and Palestinians regard it as the future capital of an independent Palestinian state.
