Trump Likely Helped Gianforte's Special Election Win

"Great win in Montana", President Donald Trump said Friday as he attended the G-7 summit in Italy. But Steve Daines, a GOP senator from Montana, and House speaker Paul Ryan both called on Gianforte to apologize.

"Tonight, as Greg was giving a separate interview in a private office, The Guardian's Ben Jacobs entered the office without permission, aggressively shoved a recorder in Greg's face, and began asking badgering questions", his office said in a statement after the candidate allegedly attacked the reporter.

"Last night, I made a mistake and I took an action that I can't take back - and I'm not proud of what happened", he said during his victory rally in Bozeman.

The apology came after several GOP lawmakers called for Gianforte to say he was sorry to Jacobs.

"And to see this person who wants to be the one representative into the House of Representatives from Montana be sort of a wannabe Trump - you know, use language like that, treat people harshly like that - that's his model". Republican Gianforte received only 67.9% of President Trump's November vote total.

"We like to win, don't get me wrong".

The Montana state Democratic Party asserted that the special election was too early to expect voters to make a complete reversal on the party they supported in 2016. Gianforte apologized to the reporter in his victory speech Thursday night. "They also, I think, are reluctant to admit that they made a mistake".

The seat - which has not been held by a Democrat since 1997 - had most recently been held by Republican Ryan Zinke, whom Mr Trump appointed as interior secretary. Eventually, after Gianforte was charged with misdemeanor assault, KECI reported on the incident. "It's unfortunate that this aggressive behavior from a liberal journalist created this scene at our campaign volunteer BBQ", a Gianforte spokesperson initially said of the incident, according to Fox News.

Gianforte, a 56-year-old software entrepreneur from Bozeman, was the favorite going into a race just several months after Trump won the state by 20 points. "Democrats who have won statewide in Montana tend to be moderate, and Quist is no moderate". A technology entrepreneur who was widely regarded among even Republican strategists as an imperfect candidate, Gianforte could be heard on an audio tape yelling at the reporter, Ben Jacobs of The Guardian. Quist gained the most ground in non-urban precincts. Daines said that fact-Quist's embrace of the Democratic left in a state that typically rewards Democratic moderates-would sink Quist.
