South Korea fires warning shots at North Korea over 'unidentified flying object'

South Korea fires warning shots at North Korea over 'unidentified flying object'

In January 2016, the military fired on a North Korean drone that flew into the demilitarized zone, and in September 2014, a South Korean fisherman found a drone that was also believed to have come from there.

Seoul's military broadcasted a warning in response to the incursion into South Korean airspace as falling rain obstructed a better view of the object, local news service MoneyToday reported Tuesday. Its last missile test was on Sunday.

Tensions are high after North Korea recently launched another missile test earlier this week.

US President Donald Trump has said "a major, major conflict" with North Korea is possible and that all options are on the table, but that he wants to resolve the crisis diplomatically.

South and North Korea can "hold a dialogue if there is a shift in North Korea's attitude or under the right circumstances", Lee said in written comments to the parliament for his confirmation hearing set to begin on Wednesday.

The United States has also called on all states to sever or downgrade diplomatic and commercial relations with North Korea.

China's imports from North Korea fell in April to a near three-year low, data showed Tuesday, as Beijing faces calls to put more economic pressure on its nuclear-armed ally.

Participants included Adm. Harry Harris, commander of the U.S. Pacific Command, Gen. Vincent Brooks, commander of the U.S. Forces Korea and the Combined Forces Command, and Lt. Gen.

Brooks said, according to Yonhap News, a "very unsafe situation" is looming over the peninsula as North Korea carried out missile launches, claiming to be capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

A spokesman for the General Staff of the KPA, responding to a question from a KCNA reporter, instead accused the South of firing into the North and said the ROK army had engaged in a "military provocation".

USA and South Korean officials and experts believe the North is several years away from having such a capability.

Lee Nak-yon said North Korea should freeze its nuclear program before coming back to the negotiating table. Despite this call, a new weekly ferry service between North Korea and Russian Federation began last week.

North Korean drone flights across the border are unusual, but have happened before.
