Ben Stokes stars as England hold off South Africa in thrilling ODI

South Africa hope to live up to their reputation as the world's top-ranked one-day global side at Southampton on Saturday after blowing away "cobwebs" in their series-opening defeat by England.

Miller finished unbeaten on 71 (51 balls, 5 fours and 2 sixes) and Morris on 36 (22 balls, 3 fours and 2 sixes) as the pair shared a partnership of 62 for the sixth wicket in 6.3 overs.

The series, a warm-up for the Champions Trophy tournament in England and Wales that starts next week, concludes at Lord's on Monday.

South Africa made three changes to their XI, as they look to level the three-match series, while Ben Stokes retained his place for England despite concerns over a knee injury.

Ben Stokes was dropped off the first two deliveries he faced before he smashed 101 off 79 balls.

Next ball produced another edge, with wicket-keeper Quinton de Kock failing to hold a more hard chance.

Although the scans were inconclusive, Stokes still took a limited part in England s practice session on Friday at the Ageas Bowl, the headquarters of south coast club Hampshire and the venue for Saturday s second ODI. Stokes subsequently hoisted both medium-pacer Andile Phehlukwayo and Morris high over deep midwicket for sixes.

Facing his first ball of the match, Stokes prodded forward to a delivery off debutant Keshav Maharaj and got a thick edge that popped through Amla's hands for four.

Opener Quinton de Kock (98 from 103 balls) led the South African reply before he was caught by wicketkeeper Buttler off Moeen Ali.

South Africa then suffered a further setback when de Kock, in sight of a hundred, tried to run off-spinner Mooen Ali down to third man and was caught behind by opposing gloveman Buttler.
