Senate votes to confirm Iowa governor as ambassador to China

The U.S. Senate voted overwhelmingly on Monday to confirm Iowa Governor Terry Branstad, one of the U.S. politicians most closely acquainted with China, as President Donald Trump's ambassador to Beijing.

Branstad has led six trade missions to China as governor and developed an enduring friendship with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Branstad will resign as governor on Wednesday morning and Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds will be sworn in as Iowa's 43rd governor.

Shortly after his resignation, Reynolds will be sworn in as governor in a ceremony at the Capitol in Des Moines.

Branstad is the longest-serving governor in USA history.

When Cohoon entered the Legislature in 1987, Democrats controlled the House of Representatives and Senate while Branstad was governor.

"As an old friend, I'd tell him where he's falling short", Branstad said earlier this month before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. "Roadblocks ahead for infrastructure plan MORE (R-Ky.) praised Brandstad, noting his decades of work on agriculture and familiarity with China".

Reynolds served as a state senator and county treasurer before being elected lieutenant governor in 2010.

Speaking in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said Branstad had worked hard to push relations between Chinese and USA regions and China hoped he could play an even more positive role in increasing understanding and promoting relations once he takes office. It also will mark the first time Iowa has had a female governor.

I'm pleased that the Senate is finally considering the nomination of Governor Branstad to be Ambassador to China.

I'm honored to have the opportunity today to speak to my colleagues about my good friend, Governor Terry Branstad.

"I'm hopeful that longtime relationship. will help me as a go-between for President Trump and President Xi", Branstad said.

Branstad said his historical, political and military items and memorabilia will be divided among the State Historical Building in Des Moines, a museum in Forest City and the Gold Star Museum at Camp Dodge in Johnston. "She's a thrower and I'm a saver, let's put it that way, but that's always been the case".

"I will not shed a tear for his departure to China".

That's expected to happen within the next few days.
