Intel Corporation's Core X-Series Processors Revealed

These are the Intel Core i9, which will appear in the next few weeks in two versions with 10 and 12 process cores and will also have up to 44 PCIe tracks to create desktop PCs with truly fantastic features.

Intel's upcoming Core i9-7920X will reportedly feature 12C/24T with somewhere around 4GHz boost CPU clocks, with 16.5MB of L3 cache, 44 PCIe lanes, and 140W TDP. It has a base clock of 4.2 GHz with 4.5 GHz boost and has 8MB of L3 cache.

I put all of the scores into one of our benchmark templates, so you can see the scores in a much easier to understand way. This part will run at a base frequency of 3.6GHz and offer a maximum single-core turbo speed of 4.3GHz in Turbo Boost 2.0 mode, with 4.5GHz for Turbo Boost Max 3.0. It was only a matter of time until Chipzilla retaliated, and a leaked slide from a German presentation suggests that Intel is stepping up its own Skylake-X HEDT (High End DeskTop) platforms. First, there's the amount of L3 cache.

The chip would feature a total of 13.75 MB cache, that's 1.375 MB per core.

Sweepr, the Anandtech poster who leaked this information, claims that Intel has made up for the sharp L3 deficit by quadrupling the size of its L2 cache. Maybe Intel would take to the Computex event to do that. And how effective (and how large) various caches need to be for optimal performance is partially a function of the cache architecture. The six-to-12-core variants will all be rated at a 140-watt thermal design power, while the quad-core chips will be rated at 112 watts. Still, it is a refreshing thought that Intel is actually trying to pull the strings once more in the field where it practically monopolized before the Ryzen processors became a thing. Unless Intel plans a serious price cut at this core count, enthusiasts will have to pay top dollar for a 32-lane solution. The company though is yet to acknowledge they have any ambitions beyond the Ryzen 7. It is also believed to be making its way later in August this year, though the rest of the i9 models are expected to be coming out in June. There's the tiniest hint of an upgrade in the i7-7740K, with its 4.3GHz base clock as opposed to the 4.2GHz base clock of the 7700K, but the Core i7-7640K isn't an i7 at all. It's a sensible change, with Intel moving all new 6-core and higher processors to the new brand. The upcoming i7 7740K and 7640K chips will have a 4.3 GHz and 4.0 GHz base clock respectively, with boost clocks going up to a respective 4.5 Ghz and 4.2 Ghz.
