Supreme Court to hear CS Karnan plea against conviction order

Supreme Court to hear CS Karnan plea against conviction order

"The team was told that he had left for Chennai on an early morning flight", the officer said. The bench agreed to look into the petition.

Justice Karnan accused the Chief Justice of India J S Khehar-led seven-judge bench of caste bias in initiating proceedings against him for he belonged to a low caste Dalit community. But even as the Kolkata police tried to carry out the SC order and arrest Justice Karnan on Wednesday, he was nowhere to be found.

The plea was mentioned before the bench, that also comprised Justices Kurian Joseph, R F Nariman, U U LALIT and Abdul Nazeer, which had just concluded the day's hearing on the issue of triple talaq.

The court ordered the Director General of West Bengal Police to constitute a team for the implementation of its order "forthwith".

Karnan was convicted of contempt by the top court on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, there are reports that the Tamil Nadu government has direct its police to go slow on the matter as Justice Karnan's arrest can create law and order issue at his native place in Tamil Nadu, India Today reported.

But Karnan refused to undergo medical tests as directed by the Supreme Court and told the team of doctors, in a written response, that he is "absolutely normal and with a stable mind".

The 61-year-old judge facing contempt of court charge is also seeking an appointment with President Pranab Mukherjee to present his case.

When Justice Chinnaswamy Swaminathan Karnan was sentenced by the Supreme Court on Tuesday, the now infamous Calcutta High Court judge came under the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.

Speculations are that the Calcutta High Court judge may have fled the country.

The accusations, which were not the first of their kind made by the controversial judge, met the ire of the Supreme Court nearly instantaneously, which launched contempt proceedings against Karnan for lowering the dignity of the Indian judiciary. An obstinate Karnan stayed his transfer order on February 15, 2016 which was suspended by the apex court. Numerous issues raised in the Karnan case, starting from his allegations of corruption and issue of appointments, are rooted in this.
