House gives initial approval to adoption bill

As on Saturday, the state house will have the potential to pass the bill for an immediate effect, which will raise many questions from other religious as well as LGBT people in and outside the state of the Texas.

The bill would protect adoption providers from punishment by the government if they decline to facilitate adoptions to prospective parents due to their religion and/or sexual orientation.

In addition to the adoption implications, the bill allows child welfare agencies to place the children under their care in religious schools and block them from obtaining abortion services and contraceptives.

Randy Daniels, vice-president of Child and Family Services for the Dallas-based Christian child welfare organization Buckner International, said religious agencies are terrified of lawsuits for turning away parents.

Frank, who is an adoptive father, said the objective of his bill is "not to exclude or deny services, it is to help as many people as possible to participate in the services in a way that respects all points of view".

"We want to make sure that we can practice within the framework of our sincerely held religious beliefs", Daniels said. The bill will now be sent to the Texas Senate.

"Say you call an agency and say, 'I'm Jewish, ' and it's a Catholic agency and they hang up on you", she said.

Many state-funded Texas adoption agencies routinely deny non-Christian, gay, and unmarried applicants on religious grounds - and now they are backing legislation being considered Tuesday by the state House created to protect them from potential lawsuits. That's what's so incredibly disappointing about this situation", Maddox began, "If this bill was passed, (legislators) are potentially depriving these needy children of, not only an incredible home full of love and nurturing but (they're) depriving them of the opportunity to experience family life in general.

"If the bill becomes law, it seems quite likely that the state will be sued by Texans seeking to vindicate their constitutional rights", Robertson said in an email.

Sponsors say it protects religious objections already being raised by adoption agencies.

"HB 3859 is a wholesale rejection of LGBT people as foster and adoptive parents, and it says to LGBTQ kids in the child welfare system: 'There is something wrong with you, '" Currey Cook, counsel and director of Lambda Legal's Youth in Out-of-Home Care Project, said in a statement.

It would allow state-funded adoption agencies to discriminate against couples based on religious belief.

Dear Reader, because of your generous support, we have received enough funds to send many audio Bibles to Iraqi and Syrian refugees displaced by ISIS in the Middle East.

HB 3859 was passed along largely party lines in a 93-49 vote, with three Democrats joining Republican lawmakers in voting for the bill.

"This goes against the best interest of the child", she said.

The Texas Senate has approved a bill expanding the definition of hazing in civil and criminal cases.

"We're further casting these children off", said Rep.
