Palestinians stay on hunger strike despite snacking claims

Palestinian terrorist and convicted murderer Marwan Barghouti has been leading a hunger strike to protest detention of so-called political prisoners.

The health of the 1,600 hunger striking Palestinian prisoners is in danger as they are now on the 23rd day of their strike, the Palestinian Committee of Prisoners' Affairs warned today.

An unnamed IPS official told Channel 2 on Monday that video clips of Barghouti eating were obtained as part of an IPS scheme to induce the hunger strike's leaders to eat by hiding food in their cells.

Israeli authorities say 894 Palestinian prisoners have kept up the strike.

- The Israeli media launches the war of rumors and lies about the strike, in order to create confusion in the Palestinian streets and between the striking detainees, and to demoralize the escalation of the strike.

The statement highlighted that Israeli authorities had prepared ambulances outside of every prison, and said that "the occupation's government treats hunger strikers with such cruelty and savagery to the extent that it is willing to completely exhaust their health and lead them to death".

Assaf Librati, a spokesman for the prison service, said strike organizer and Palestinian uprising leader Marwan Barghouti ate a candy bar on May 5 and cookies on April 27.

Supporters of Marwan Barghouti say the video released earlier this week and purportedly showing him snacking is a fabrication meant to break the prisoners' morale.

The initial post has since been removed from Pizza Hut Israel's Facebook page.

Pizza Hut issued an apology for the ad on the Facebook account of its franchise in Lebanon.

Others shamed the company for attempting to capitalise on a hunger strike aimed at garnering dignity for Palestinian prisoners.

"The local franchisee in the country removed it immediately and the relationship with the agency that posted it was terminated, and we truly regret any hurt this may have caused".

In response to the ad, a large number of Palestinians called for a boycott of the pizza chain on social media.

His wife said on Sunday Barghouti had been put in solitary confinement 22 times since he was jailed.

Polls suggest that the 58-year-old Barghouti is the most popular choice among Palestinians to succeed 82-year-old Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
