Always Dreaming wins rain-soaked Kentucky Derby

Always Dreaming wins rain-soaked Kentucky Derby

No other horses threatened him down the stretch and Velazquez furiously pumped his right arm as they crossed the finish line.

"Once he got into a comfortable position he got into the bridle".

It is the second Derby win for both Valezquez and Always Dreaming's owner, Todd Pletcher. This is all the more sweet.

Turns out the dark brown colt knew best.

Irish War Cry (9/2) won the Wood Memorial. "I probably daydream a little too much". I thought he got him in a good rhythm, got him in a good position. Always Dreaming ran 1 1/4 miles in 2:03.59 and paid $11.40, $7.20 and $5.80.

The lines to place bets were long all the way up to Saturday's big race.

Forwardly placed from the beginning, Always Dreaming tracked 54-1 shot Battle of Midway from the rail. Everybody dreams of something, whether it's a big event or special day, the birth of their child, winning the Kentucky Derby. It came on the third try for the Ireland-bred horse.

Always Dreaming wasn't for catching in the stretch, though, with Lookin At Lee second and Battle Of Midway holding on for third.

The winning horse entered the race as the favorite at 9-2. He raced wide in the middle of the pack down the backstretch and rallied to finish fourth. He rallied for fourth, but was beaten nearly nine lengths.

After riding Always Dreaming to victory at the 2017 Kentucky Derby, jockey John Velazquez believes the horse is more than just a one-hit wonder. He sought his first Derby victory.

Irish War Cry, ridden by Rajiv Maragh, will try to be the first horse to win from Post 17. Velazquez won it a year later aboard Animal Kingdom.

"I think for the first 25 starters I had to defend my record", Pletcher said.

"We anxious about how he would handle it", said Velazquez.

Patch, whose left eye was removed a year ago after an extreme inflammation, became a sentimental favourite, going from 30-1 in the early odds to 12-1 by race time before finishing 14th in the 20-horse field. Can Pletcher, Velazquez and their horse keep their own dreams alive?

The victor owners were Brooklyn Boyz Stables, Teresa Viola Racing and various other partners that bought a piece or so along the way.

That includes cook-outs, a photo booth and even a contest for the best hat, called the Run for the Roses Hat Revue.

American Pharoah's trainer, Bob Baffert, who did not have a horse in the race, said he would be watching from his "Grade I couch" in California, a day after he won the premier race for 3-year-old fillies, the Kentucky Oaks, with Abel Tasman. The 5-year-old gelding trained by Ben Colebrook pulled it out by a head over Awesome Slew for a 13-1 upset as the skies opened up again.

Rain fell in Louisville for most of Thursday and Friday, but the rain stopped early in the card on Saturday before returning briefly as a strong shower later in the afternoon. When Patch was loaded into stall No. 20 for the race, he saw thousands of fans packing the grandstands, but none of his four-legged competitors. He lost his left eye previous year to inflammation - coincidentally, after he'd already been named. "His name is Don Nelson, and I'm here for them to support him".

"Todd and I talked about it a lot".
