Two Chicago cops shot, wounded in drive-by

As the pair were driving through the "Back of the Yards neighborhood" to follow up on an earlier investigation, two vehicles pulled up to the officers and someone from one of those vehicles opened fire on them with a "high-powered weapon", police said.

The shooting of the two Chicago Police Department officers happened on South Ashland Avenue on Chicago's South Side, in a neighborhood known for its high rate of crime.

Police in suburban Dallas are acknowledging that a video showing an officer fatally shooting a black 15-year-old contradicts the department's original account of the incident. Understandably, this has angered the police community, but it won't change until the media recognize the inherent danger of the explosive rhetoric coming from activistS that puts the lives of officers in danger.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi tells the Chicago Sun-Times that police "don't believe whoever did this knew it was a police vehicle". We are going to catch them.

Police continued to investigate Tuesday night.

Two policemen were injured in a shootout with gunmen in Chicago's South Side late on Tuesday, the force said. "Now it's the guns, then more recently the rifles have been introduced into our neighborhoods". One of them was found near 37th Street and Racine Avenue, less than two miles away, according to a source citing preliminary information.

The attack occurred after the officers saw someone inside a silver van shooting at another vehicle, police said.

Police said that was the only area of the city where rifles styled after AR-15s and AK-47s were regularly used, a menacing new development in the gang fights.

It's unclear how numerous high-powered rifles were used in the shootings, but police suspected they were being passed around by members of four Hispanic gangs in the Deering police district, which covers Back of the Yards and Brighton Park. They were wearing civilian clothes at the time but had on vests with police badges on them, Guglielmi said. Two cars pulled up alongside them and people starting shooting at the officers.

A student with a large hunting knife stabbed at least four people on the University of Texas campus, killing one and seriously wounding the others before surrendering to police, authorities said.

Is it a coincidence that news of another high-profile police shooting of a young black man broke on Saturday? "Come on, come on, come on", one officer said.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and aldermen were also at the hospital, CBS Chicago says. "We want to catch the people that did that and make sure we have prosecutions on these cases", Kevin Graham, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7, tells CBS 2's Roseanne Tellez.

"They're OK", the supervisor said. Two officers arrived with a box of coffee and a large bag.
