Trump to meet Australian PM on 1st presidential trip to NYC

Police are expecting protests around the decommissioned aircraft carrier Intrepid - the site where Trump is expected to meet with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on Thursday - and at Trump Tower, Reuters reported.

It will be his first trip back since taking office.

"I have no doubt that the prime minister and President Trump will find a lot in common, I'm sure they'll get along well". "Not to mention spend millions of our money to protect Trump Tower".

The NYPD will be spending approximately $308,000 to keep Trump safe during his stay in NY, a department spokesman told Patch.

The American Australian Association notes that the "critical" 1942 "battle that saved Australia" was the "first defeat suffered by the Empire of Japan and stopped the looming Japanese invasion of Australia". The turnout is uncertain, but activists are using Facebook and other social media to call on protesters to gather at several locations throughout the city to voice opposition to his immigration, health care and other policies.

Hundreds of police will be dispatched and barricades and road blocks will be set up on streets near the Intrepid, which has become a popular museum.

Gates now line the sidewalk around the the USS Intrepid, where Trump will speak at an event Thursday evening commemorating the 75th anniversary of that battle. The events beginning earlier in the day are planning to march south to join this one, and will do so even after it was announced that Trump won't be spending the night in his gilded tower, but instead at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey.

"The president looks forward to meeting the prime minister and showcasing the enduring bonds, deep friendship and close alliance the U.S. has with Australia", White House press secretary Sean Spicer told reporters.

Manhattan is where Trump made a name by transforming himself from a local real-estate developer into a celebrity businessman and now president.

The city has already run up a significant bill for protection of Trump and his family, including about $24 million during the period between his election and inauguration and more than $300,000 a day since then protecting first lady Melania Trump and 11-year-old son Barron, who have continued to live in Trump Tower since the president moved to Washington.

During the presidential transition, speculation swirled that Trump, a famed homebody and creature of habit, would return to Manhattan frequently.

"I feel guilty when I go back to here, because I hate to see the New Yorkers with the streets closed".

The Republican president received only 18 percent of the vote in the decidedly liberal city but his allies say New Yorkers should still salute the historic nature of his visit.
