South Africa appoint Englishman Baxter for second spell

South Africa appoint Englishman Baxter for second spell

"SAFA believes that the coach has the necessary skills to navigate the tough qualification path for the African Nations Cup and the FIFA World Cup", South African Football Association CEO Dennis Mumble said in a statement.

Stuart Baxter looks like the favourite to succeed Shakes Mashaba after being linked with the job for some time now.

Safa has reached agreement with Baxter's current club SuperSport United for the 63-year-old to continue with them until July.

SuperSport United CEO Stanley Matthews said that while Baxter's new appointment was a loss for the team, he wished the new coach well for his second term at Bafana Bafana.

In a break with an SAFA tradition of making major announcements at media conferences, confirmation that Baxter had been appointed came via an emailed statement.

He guided the most popular football team in the republic, Soweto-based Kaizer Chiefs, to two league titles within three seasons.

SAFA first suspended and then sacked former coach Ephraim Mashaba in November a year ago after a public outburst aimed at the organisation's president, Danny Jordaan, following a 2-1 World Cup qualifier victory over Senegal.

Baxter's agent, Steve Kapulschnik, confirmed last month they had been in contact with SAFA regarding the role, while SuperSport confirmed they had given the coach permission to negotiate with SAFA.

Much to the concern of former South African striker Benni McCarthy, who forms part of the committee that has been assisting SAFA in appointing a new national coach.

SuperSport are still in the hunt for trophies, however, having reached the South African Cup semi-finals and the CAF Confederation Cup group phase.

"However, we also understand that Stuart would like to have a final go at competing at a World Cup, and that would be a fantastic achievement for the country as a whole".
