Emmanuel Macron picks up endorsement from Hollande

French far-right leader and candidate for the 2017 presidential election Marine Le Pen poses for a selfie in Paris, April 24, 2017.

Visiting a market in the northern town of Rouvroy on Monday, 48-year-old Ms Le Pen lashed out at the "rotten old republican front" - the ad-hoc anti-FN coalition formed by mainstream parties whenever the party is at the gates of power.

Le Pen, who has been hoping to emulate Donald Trump's victory in the U.S., said the French faced a choice between "runaway globalisation" and a protectionist France.

But a day after the country's first-round vote, from which Macron and Le Pen emerged as finalists, Le Pen announced that she would step down from her party to focus on her campaign.

Speaking to voters from the Elysee Palace, the Socialist leader said France is in danger of "becoming isolated and breaking away from the EU" if Le Pen swept to power.

I am the presidential candidate, " adding that she wants to be "above partisan considerations".

French outgoing President Francois Hollande has warned of "the risk for our country's future" if far-right leader Marine Le Pen were to win the presidential election. It is largely symbolic, as she will only temporarily be replaced by the party's vice president, Jean-François Jalkh, for two weeks, allowing her to concentrate exclusively on the presidential campaign.

"We will not be holding back in this campaign", Richard Ferrand, Macron's top aide, said on France Inter Tuesday. Her father, Jean-Marie, headed the FN before her and her niece, Marion Marechal-Le Pen, is waiting in the wings to take over eventually.

Another protest, dubbed "Neither Le Pen Nor Macron", is due to take place on the Place de la République on Thursday. "This is the first time in the history of the French 5th Republic that neither presidential candidate advancing to the second round comes from a major political party", Jackson shared.

As expected Marie Le Pen's odds have drifted to 5/6-1 to win France 2017.

Hitting that angle in Rouvroy, Le Pen, after urging "all patriots" on Sunday to rally behind her, on Monday handed out leaflets in which she pledged to "eradicate Islamist terrorism" and expel "Islamist foreigners".

In March, the European Union legislature lifted Ms Le Pen's immunity after she posted a picture of Islamic State (ISIS) violence on social media.

In the rest of French-speaking Switzerland Macron narrowly beat Fillion, with the two candidates taking 33 percent and 31 percent of the vote respectively.
