Kevin Chappell Overcomes Windy Conditions and Takes Lead at Valero Texas Open

Kevin Chappell survived a huge test of nerve as well as a final-round charge from Brooks Koepka as he clinched his maiden PGA Tour victory at the Valero Texas Open. "I had played some really good rounds of golf".

It would have been easy for Chappell to succumb to the course and conditions, especially after he had three bogeys and a double bogey on the front nine and turned with a 38.

NOTES: There have not been multiple leaders at the Valero Texas Open after 54 holes since 1993 when Jay Haas, Bob Lohr, Tom Lehman and Dan Forsman shared the lead at Oak Hills. But I had the putter rolling again today.

Wiesberger hit his drive in the playoff over the water off the tee and ended up in the bank while Fleetwood played safely onto the fairway and found the heart of the green with his second shot. South Korean Kim Seung-hyuk shot a 69 and tied for third place at 10 under 274 with overnight leader Hwang Jung-gon and Japan's Mikumu Horikawa. His day was relatively uneventful until the 14th when he got his first birdie of the round.

Chappell lipped out for eagle at the 14th as he retained his outright lead, but he fell into a share at the top with Koepka when he bunkered his second to 15 and failed to get up and down.

But while Chappell stuck his tee shot on the 189-yard seventh inside five feet and made birdie to get to 10-under, Koepka would make bogey even after hitting the green at the tough par-4 ninth. He tapped in to gain a stroke, and he made good two holes later with a 12-foot birdie. That should lead to quite a shootout over the final 18 holes.

Palmer now has back to back season-best tournament results after finishing tied for 11th at the RBC Heritage last week in SC.

Chappell has six second place finishes in his career, but has never won an PGA Tour event. Funk and Sluman birdied five of their first six holes on the par-3 course while playing modified alternate shot in a four-ball format. "I knew when I found it, I could extend it. I'm happy for him, get the first win out of the way and, you know, hopefully for the next few years we'll be battling it out".

Laird looked confident when he birdied the second, but he bogeyed three of the next four holes and laboured to a three-over 75 to close on three under par.
