McDonald's staff tipped off police about the location of Facebook killer Steve Stephens after he ordered 20 Chicken McNuggets.

Stephens was accused of fatally shooting Robert Godwin Sr in Cleveland, Ohio as the 74-year-old grandfather was walking home from dinner on Easter Sunday.

Police said it appeared Godwin was chosen at random.

Stephens told the elderly man that Lane was the reason he was being killed before shooting the Cleveland man in the head. The owner, Thomas DuCharme Jr, said workers tried to "buy some time for the cops" and told Stephens it would take some time to make the fries.

According to CBC News, while Cleveland's mayor, Frank Jackson, spoke to the media about closure in the case, the city's police chief, Calvin Williams stated, "we would have preferred it had not ended this way", saying there were still many unanswered questions. On Tuesday, Stephens shot and killed himself after a short chase with state police in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Stephens allegedly filmed himself committing the murder and published the video on Facebook along with another video in which he claims to have previously murdered an additional 13 people. The incident highlights Facebook's awkward position when it comes to detecting, censoring and removing graphic content on its platform.

Responding troopers spotted Stephens leaving the restaurant in Erie and went after him, bumping his vehicle to try to get it to stop, authorities said.

Lane said her and Stephens were romantically involved for a while and had discussed getting married.

"He would want this from us and he would say 'Tonya, forgive them, for they know not what they do", Godwin-Baines said.
