Rankings of MI counties on Health Outcomes, Health Factors

Sandra Averhart reports on county health rankings. On the other extreme, Saratoga, Rockland, Nassau, Westchester and Putnam counties headed the top five healthiest counties in the ranking.

One factor that might contribute to the decline in Duval County's rating is a drop in the ratio of primary care doctors in the county, said Attica Scott, a community coach with County Health Rankings & Roadmaps. Anyone interested in participating can contact Amy Wergin, Manitowoc County health officer, at 920-683-4155 or Short at 920-652-0238.

Shawnee County's overall rankings in recent years had been 51st in 2016, 55th in 2015, 65th in 2014, 70th in 2013 and 65th in 2012.

"We have a very strong community coalition", Lee said, which focuses on outreach, education and networking.

• The health outcomes rankings are based on two types of measures including how long people live and how healthy people feel while alive. Fifty-five percent of all 2-year-olds cared for at FCHN were found to be up-to-date on 10 recommended vaccines; the highest rate throughout the MaineHealth system as of September 2016.

A similar dynamic played out on the opposite side of the state line.

This year, the report took a special look at premature deaths - cases of those who die before the age of 75 - and found such deaths to be accelerating: In 2015, 1.22 million people died prematurely in the USA, nearly 40,000 people more than in 2014.

Large suburban metro counties went from the lowest to the highest rate of premature death due to drug overdose within the past decade.

The RWJF and the University of Wisconsin's Population Health Institute have been compiling and publishing the County Health Rankings for the past eight years.

The health of Duval County's residents has continued to decline over the past three years, while St. Johns County residents remain the healthiest in Florida - that's according to a new report by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and University of Wisconsin.

But adult obesity continues to be an issue.

The survey says 18 percent of people report they are in poor or fair health. Still, the current rate is two points below the state rate. The rankings measure lifespan and quality of life in almost every county in the nation. Last year's report cited 17 percent uninsured in the county. It includes air pollution, which is trending downward.

The report also lists some of the strategies that communities are taking to reduce the number of lives lost. The average in Missouri is 22 percent. Driving alone to work and long commutes finish the category.

Baltimore is the least healthy jurisdiction in Maryland followed by several Eastern Shore counties, according to an annual ranking that has changed little over the past several years despite improvements in some of the city's worst statistics.

Mark Holland, mayor and CEO of the Unified Government of Wyandotte County, said the county has tried to grab "low-hanging fruit", such as raising the age to purchase tobacco to deter teens from smoking.

The county that ranked highest for health outcomes in The Register-Herald region was Greenbrier County (No. 25).

"The score that concerned me the most was the health behaviors,"she said, which was 38th in the state".
