For the first time during the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play tournament, Dustin Johnson was tested.
"I'd rather not play a fellow Spaniard".
American Johnson will become the first player to win all four World Golf Championships events should he defeat young Spaniard Jon Rahm later on Sunday at Austin Country Club. Last time I said that was Torrey Pines.
Rahm made the final with a 3&2 victory over American Bill Haas.
Johnson won the first three holes against Noren and was still ahead by the same margin at the turn, only to bogey the 10th and 11th and lose the next to a birdie.
We've all been there, lining up the flawless tee shot, practice swing looking good, visualising the ball landing in the middle of the fairway...only to see the ball veer off into the water or the bushes or roll two feet away from the tee.More news: Scientists 'discover' more than 100 planets in our solar system
The 22-year-old, who was the world's top ranked amateur while studying at Arizona State University, is now 25th in the world after winning his first PGA Tour title in the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in January. Results back up Mickelson's confidence: Rahm has already won on this, his maiden season on the PGA Tour, finished in a share of third at the WGC Mexico and now swaggered through to the last four of the WGC Match Play.
Earlier, Australian Marc Leishman was sent packing from the WGC-Match Play after going down to a red-hot Phil Mickelson 4 and 3 in their final 16 clash.
Tanihara, who began the Match Play with a victory over Jordan Spieth on Wednesday, took down Paul Casey in 17 holes in the fourth round.
Jon Rahm, standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 220 pounds, towered over Kjeldsen both on the course and on the final scoreboard.
Rahm's hot play shouldn't surprise anyone; he won his first career PGA Tour event at the Farmers Insurance Open in January and almost won the WGC Mexico Championship, where he finished third earlier this month. Rahm sent Kjeldsen, one of the hottest players in the field, packing with a dominant 7 and 5 victory. "I gave him a hole there (by hitting into a water hazard on the 11th) and on 10 missed a short putt, but other than that I played really solid, drove it well, hit some good iron shots and rolled some nice putts in". If there is a tie in group play, it is decided by a sudden-death playoff. "He's got that thing about him that's going to make him a big-time victor out here, and hopefully I can hang with him".
